Our dog Tuffy was born on February 15th, 1999. We had a snowstorm the day before and so I happened to be “snowed in” and home from work the day the puppies were born. Tuffy’s mother was a really good cowdog, Jessie – a border collie, australian shepherd, and blue heeler mix. She was extremely smart. We bred Jessie to “Doc,” a purebred border collie owned by Mark and Jane McKinney. Jessie had six puppies – we kept one (Tuffy) and my mom took one (Belle) and the rest all went to good homes. Jessie died in 2005 from cancer, just short of her 13th birthday.

Tuffy has traveled with us since day one. He was a cowdog for a little while, when we lived on the Broken O Ranch, but mostly has been a rodeo dog and Jody’s faithful companion. We have snuck him into countless hotel rooms! Tuffy makes friends wherever he goes but he has his favorites: the ranch girls at the Calgary Stampede, and Kay & Vernon Dennis... mostly because of Vernon’s fried chicken!
